Lesson Plan: UTeach Lesson 1
Topic: Masking in Macromedia Flash
Performance Objectives:
* Students will be able to define mask, timeline, keyframe, and tween with respect to Macromedia Flash
* Students will be able to create a masking effect with Flash
* Students will be able to identify masking around them and uses for masking
Prerequisites:
* Students should have some familiarity with the Flash environment
* Students should know basics of what objects in Flash are and basics on how to manipulate them (symbols, grouping, moving, and scaling)
Lesson based on 5E model:
(1) Engage the students by asking them what they think masking is and for examples. Where have they seen masking effects? What are some examples? How are they useful?
(2) Explore and continue the engagement by showing the students an example of masking in Flash. How do they think masking is accomplished? What layers do they see, and which ones are masked? What does the mask itself look like?
(3) Follow by explaining the parts of the demo the different layers, their position atop one another.
(4) Have the students perform the Masking_HOWTO lab.
(5) Elaborate and evaluate by looking at what the students have done and asking about other ways to use masks. What effects can be produced other than the x-ray effect in the lab using masking? How could you use masking as a web designer, a marketer, or in a presentation? Where else might you use masking and for what purpose? Encourage students to look at using masking as an option for their web-based projects in the future.
